  1. Residential schools were funded by the Canadian government and were run by churches and religious leaders

  2. Roughly 150,000 children attended residential schools

  3. An estimated 6,000 children died at residential schools

  4. Many children were physically, emotionally, and sexually abused by the school board

  5. Over 130 residential schools operated across Canada between the years 1831 – 1996

  6. The first residential school was The Mohawk Institute in Brantford, Ontario which opened in 1831

  7. The last residential school to operate was The Gordon Residential School in Punnichy, Saskatchewan. It was shut down in 1996

  8. In 2008, Prime Minister Harper offered a full apology on behalf of Canadians for the Indian Residential Schools system
