Chanie Wenjack was a 12 year old Indigenous boy. He sadly passed away as he furiously tried to escape from Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School in Northern Ontario. Chanie tried walking home a distance of 600 Km, however, the extreme cold and hunger did not allow him to reach his final destination. Unfortunately, on 23 October 1996 Chanie’s body was found 60 Km away from Cecilia Jeffrey Indian’s Residential School

Chanie is a symbol of resistance in Canadian History. Chanie’s death in the year 1996 gained national attention across Canada and resulted in the first inquest into the treatment of Indigenous children in Canadian residential schools.
